Duffield Facility Release Destinations
Duffield is a regional adult jail operated by SWVRJA. The Lee County Sheriff may make an arrest or transport a defendant, and Lee courts may authorize bond or impose sentence, but SWVRJA records the jail episode. A lawful departure from Duffield can return someone to the community after bond, a court order, time served, or sentence completion. The same departure can also continue custody at Abingdon, Haysi, or Tazewell, at a VADOC institution, or with another jurisdiction. A hospital trip or court movement does not establish final release.
The release disposition is the key field. It can distinguish community release from transfer or pickup on a detainer, which is a hold or request from another authority. Ask for the actual release date and time, disposition, and destination or receiving agency. Those fields describe what happened at Duffield’s custody boundary. Request Duffield Release Records
A useful request targets one booking episode. Give the legal name and aliases, an approximate booking date, the Lee County arresting agency, and any known case or booking number. Virginia FOIA generally requires a response within five working days through production, a cited withholding, partial production, a no-record response, or use of the permitted added time. Reasonable actual charges may apply. No flat Duffield release-record or photo fee is published, so ask for electronic copies and an estimate before costs pass a stated cap. The request should ask the authority to provide any segregable public portion and cite the basis for withholding the rest.

Duffield Release Record Retention
The Library of Virginia’s GS-08 schedule treats cumulative booking and release records differently from full incarceration files. The cumulative series, which includes jail registers and automated summaries, remains for 20 years after separation. The incarceration series can contain booking sheets, confinement history, property receipts, photographs, pretrial-release papers, and parole notices. That fuller series is kept for three years after separation.
Retention is not automatic public access. Virginia FOIA exclusions can protect juveniles, victims, medical facts, security details, sealed matters, and personal identifiers. An old cumulative entry may remain even after the booking photo or full jacket reaches its shorter schedule. Requesting a precise episode soon after release improves the chance of finding the right file and limits unnecessary search work.

Duffield Releases in Court and VINE

Lee felony cases can move through two courts. General District Court may show the preliminary case as certified or transferred, while Circuit Court contains the later felony disposition and sentence. That court transfer is not release. Match the case number, charge, bond, disposition, jail term, suspended time, and probation. Then place the court’s legal action beside SWVRJA’s physical release time. Both timestamps can be correct because an order can precede completion of jail processing.
Which Lee Custodian Held Them
Lee County creates a naming problem that deserves its own check. A person arrested on a Lee County charge may be housed at Duffield even though the jail sits in adjoining Scott County. A state-responsible person may appear at a VADOC institution elsewhere in Virginia. A federal prisoner at USP Lee is physically in Lee County but is not a Duffield or county-jail inmate. Geography and custodian are not the same thing.
Use SWVRJA for the Duffield jail episode, VADOC for state custody and community supervision, and BOP for USP Lee or another federal prison. A BOP status of Released or Not in BOP Custody proves only that federal custody ended. A VADOC district-office result can mean release from secure confinement while probation or parole continues. ICE’s locator is aimed at current immigration detention and a no-result does not prove release. The strongest account names the custodian and uses that agency’s own release proof.
Duffield Release Pickup Planning
No official Duffield timetable, pickup gate, public waiting instruction, or transit plan was found. Call the facility before travel. Ask whether Duffield is still the holding location, whether release has been authorized or completed, and where an approved pickup may wait. Staff may be unable to provide a firm forecast because court orders, identity checks, paperwork, property return, and other holds can affect processing.
Do not borrow VADOC’s state-prison release rules for Duffield. VADOC publishes its own release-day deadline and possible bus transportation, but those are state institution procedures. Duffield is a regional jail. A person can also move to another SWVRJA facility before final release, so confirming location close to pickup time is essential.
After departure, the former inmate may still need personal material from the jail account. SWVRJA says a released person can use an inmate number and password to enter SmartInmate and download personal photos, messages, and postal mail at no cost. That is private account recovery for the former inmate, not a public release search. It does not replace the cumulative release entry or prove the disposition.
